Power Quality of a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) with Nonlinear Load

This report looks at the operation and power quality of an islanded microgrid with non-linear load. The Australian Energy Storage Knowledge Bank's Mobile Test Platform operated as an island connected to only the Thebarton Wind tunnel variable speed drives. The test provides an example of what future microgrids may look like under the worst case scenario of only power electronic devices, with distored and non-sinusoidal voltage and current. The power quality of the system is described using a number of standard power quality measurement techniques from IEC 61000-4-30 and IEEE 1459, including discussion on the limitations and discrepencies betwen the different measurement methods.

Waveform for inverter operation after non-linear load disconnected in Thebarton 2017
Raw, high bandwidth waveform recorded after the non-linear loads (variable speed drives) were disconnected from the islanded inverter. The waveform is 4 seconds in length, containg 2 million samples per inverter channel, and 4 samples per temperature/weather channel.
